What I Read in January 2021 + Reviews

Last month’s reading roundup was still stuck in 2020, so now I finally can cheers to a new year of books! I’ve been off my reading game – among other things, thanks to the obvious – for a while, but the fog is starting to clear. What I read in January 2021 is proof of that!

what i read january 2021
I couldn’t have asked for a better group of books to start the year. That’s further proof I need to quit putting energy into books that don’t interest me, but I feel like I “have” to read because of their popularity. Not to mention sometimes being made to feel inferior for enjoying the type of books I do. Whatever. Bottom line, simply read what you like and enjoy! This concludes my Ted Talk.

Alright, let’s get into last month’s books.

What I Read in January 2021

My rating and review: 5 stars. I couldn’t have started the year with a better book. Weeks later, I’m still thinking about it. Loved every single page.

THE WIFE UPSTAIRS by Rachel Hawkins
My rating and review: 4 stars. This was a complete trip! Such a fun modern take on Jane Eyre. All the characters were great, and I was completely wrapped up in the mystery/thriller side of the story. Hell, I was even laughing throughout the book. Highly recommend.

AT LAST (Lucky Harbor #5) by Jill Shalvis
My rating and review: 3.5 stars. Another cute installment in this series! There was a lot going on in this one – and a lot seemed unnecessary – but Amy and Matt were sweet together. Some of the side stories just kept interrupting the flow of things, so that was disappointing.

ONLY WHEN IT’S US (Bergman Brothers #1) by Chloe Liese
*Available on Kindle Unlimited.
My rating and review: 4 stars. This reminded me of a Penny Reid book! Such a cute slow burn, frenemies-to-lovers romance. Even better that the characters and their story/stories had substance. I’m not typically a fan of sports romances, so I was glad that the sports side of things didn’t overtake the whole story. Can’t wait to continue the series!

*Available on Kindle Unlimited.
My rating and review: 4.5 stars. SO GOOD. I was hooked from the start. Beautifully written with characters so flawed I couldn’t help but root for them. The ending wrapped up a little too nicely given everything in the past, but maybe that’s the beauty in forgiveness and trying to move forward.

My rating and review: 3 stars. Enjoyable enough, but forgettable. Really didn’t get into it until about 40% in. I never connected with the characters, and there was too much happening that caused a disconnect.

Currently reading: Always Only You (Bergman Brothers #2) by Chloe Liese, and I’m still slowly going through HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style by Elizabeth Holmes.

Let’s connect on Goodreads! You also can keep up with all my reading in the archives.

It’s definitely good when you just read what sounds good and not pick up all the hyped books. Glad you enjoyed these. I really want to read The Midnight Library.

I really liked When We Believed in Mermaids. I’m waiting for The Wife Upstairs to come in from the library. So many people have read The Midnight Library this past month. I have to move it up on my to read list!

I almost got The Dating Plan from BOTM, but chose something else. I am glad I read your review of it…I think I will pass or get from my library instead. I have Only When It’s Us on my TBR, glad to see a good review. I read Wife Upstairs this month too, and I really enjoyed it. My book club didn’t like it though. I feel like a lot of them don’t like anything we read so I just sit and listen haha. I definitely don’t feel bad for the books I enjoy. I tend to read a lot of romance…with a few thrillers thrown in. Life is too short to read books that are just meh!
