Our Basement Gym

I recently shared how the ‘rona pandemic made us reevaluate our gym membership along with plans for a fitness space at home. Nearly a month later, I’m excited to show off our basement gym!

Here’s what we started with:

We always knew we wanted this particular section of the basement to house the gym – it’s directly to the right of the stairs as you walk down. Too bad for us that it was dark, dingy and dirty! Not to mention cluttered with boxes and random crap that we haven’t looked for or touched in the six years since we’ve moved in. Oops! Nothing like a home project that forces you to declutter and organize. Let’s just say our trash bin was very full that week, and we made a sizeable drop-off donation to Goodwill. πŸ˜‰

With that out of the way, our basement gym transformation came together pretty quick.

What a difference lighting and flooring can make, am I right?! It still blows me away every time I walk down our basement stairs.

Let’s quickly talk about this DIY brushstroke accent wall (Thanks, Jess for the inspiration!). Literally one of the easiest projects I’ve ever tackled. I practiced on paper beforehand to determine what kind of look we wanted ultimately settling on bigger strokes. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but that’s the beauty of this technique! It was a brainless project with no rhyme or reason to pattern, and it still turned out great. Only took me about an hour, too!

The most expensive part of this transformation was of course the treadmill. For those interested, we went with a NordicTrack Commercial X11i. We’re so pleased with it! There were a few technical issues that had to be addressed when we first started using it, but everything seems to have finally worked itself out. Both Ryan and I feel lucky to have a piece of equipment as fancy as this! I find myself looking forward to my runs, and Ryan is glad that his work schedule doesn’t dictate anymore whether or not he can go to the gym.

There’s still some odds and ends that we want to add-on in the future – heavier weights for Ryan, resistance bands, medicine ball, etc. – but so far, our basement gym is functioning perfectly for us and our needs!
