Kristin Ess Fragrance-Free Products Review

Hello there! How is everyone doing? Just want to check in for a minute before getting to today’s content.

These are wild times that we’re living through right now. WILD. I’m someone that stresses easily over the unknown and experiences anxiety over things where I have zero control … so, you can imagine I’m doing just swell with everything happening. 😉 That said, for my own sanity and yours I’m going to continue to keep things as light and normal as possible around here. We have to find a new sense of normalcy right now, and this is the best way I know how! All I ask is that you take care of yourself because by doing so you’re taking care of others, too. Pay attention and listen to medical professionals (but know it’s okay to step away from it all if you need to), practice a healthy level of social distancing, and wash your damn hands!

And, on that note – let’s transition into some hair care talk! It’s not a deep dark secret at this point that I love Kristin Ess hair products. Nearly 95% of the products that I use at this point are from her brand, and every single one of my hot tools are now hers. Yep, obsessed! But, there’s nothing better than using salon-quality products that are half the price, cruelty-free and easily available at Target.

I was pretty excited when she released a fragrance-free line at the beginning of the year. Her original shampoo and conditioner unfortunately didn’t agree with my scalp, so I was hopeful that without the scent these new products would be what I’ve been looking for. I’ve been testing these products exclusively since the end of January, so I’m finally ready to share my Kristin Ess fragrance-free products review.

Kristin Ess Fragrance-Free Products Review

Daily Cleansing Shampoo

What it is: A lightly-clarifying, non-stripping daily shampoo.
Price: $12

What I think: I was most-excited for this product because 1. I had a bad reaction to the scent/formula of the original shampoo, and 2. I’m not a scientist, but for whatever reason I’ve always felt that clear shampoos work better on my hair type. If you have any idea as to why this is, go ahead and enlighten me. Well, I’m happy to report that this product is doing it’s intended job! It’s a high-lathering formula that leaves my hair feeling ridiculously clean without weighing it down or causing my color to fade quicker. I’ve also noticed that since starting to use this shampoo, I only have to wash my hair every three to four days, and my hair fallout is significantly less. I have hypothyroidism, which  has a side-effect of excess hair loss (good thing I have A LOT of hair), so this is a really big deal to me.

Shine Enhancing Conditioner

What it is: A weightless smoothing and nourishing conditioner.
Price: $12

What I think: This is a great conditioner, especially for fine-hair girls like me that don’t want anything too heavy. I use only a nickel-size or so amount from mid-shaft to ends, and my hair looks and feels way smoother! My usual post-shower rats nest is much more manageable and easy to comb through. I’d recommend this conditioner to pretty much anyone even if you use a different shampoo.

Deep Treatment Mask

What it is: A hair mask that delivers intense moisture and provides instant softness and shine.
Price: $14

What I think: I don’t have a lot of previous experience with hair masks, but I think this mask is simply okay. I’m not sure it really lives up to all it’s claims. Yes, my hair does feel a lot softer after use! But, intense moisture and shine? I haven’t seen much difference in either of those categories.

Dry Shampoo Powder

What it is: A non-aerosol dry shampoo that absorbs oil with a soft finish. Best for oily scalp types.
Price: $12

What I think: This product represents exactly why I don’t rush to post product reviews. I was OBSESSED with the dry shampoo powder the first week or so after I purchased it, but now two months later I rarely reach for it. I don’t think it does much! My hair would be oily in a short period of time, and it is a complete pain to blend in. If you have any hint of dryness on your scalp, forget it – the powder immediately clings to those spots, and no amount of rubbing, tapping, brushing or blow drying will get the product blended. Also, don’t confuse this with a texture powder – there is absolutely no grip to this product! I prefer a dry shampoo with a bit of grit/texture to it since I already have super silky hair.

Final verdict?

The Kristin Ess fragrance-free line overall lives up to it’s claims! I would highly recommend both the shampoo and conditioner if you’re looking for great, basic everyday products to get your hair clean. Both the mask and dry shampoo powder are take it or leave it, but depending on your hair type/needs you may enjoy them more than me.

I’m also still working through a bottle of the Leave-In Conditioner, but once I run out of that I plan on switching to the Detangling Tonic. I’ve heard it does wonders for fine hair that tangles easily!

Have you tried the Kristin Ess fragrance-free line? What are some of your favorite products from the overall line?
