Happy Monday and Thanksgiving week! I like to think that I’m a pretty thankful person all the time, but of course like everyone else I put a bigger emphasis on it when this time of year rolls around. Life has kind of been whatever lately – maybe it’s stress, everything going on in the world or what-have-you, but it has been extra-important to me these days to try to focus on and give thanks to the little everyday positives. A mental gratitude journal or checklist, if you will. For today, I’m putting my fingers to the keyboard to share everything I’m most grateful for – big and small! – right now. Because maybe you, too need a small pick-me-up and reminder to look for even the most insignificant things to bring a little light to your day.
Ryan and Finley. Duh, I’ll just go for the big one first. Obviously, I’m thankful for my little family every single day, but Ryan has been going above and beyond to keep me sane this last month. Even something as simple as emptying the food trap in the sink – a task I find really revolting – shows me that he cares and is thinking about me in small ways throughout the day. And, we already have established that I’m psycho-crazy in love with my dog, so I’ll just leave it at that. Finn is girl’s best friend and has let me cry into his fur more times than I count the last few weeks.
Concealer. Am I getting some eye rolls with this one? Well, too bad because it’s true. I’m having some weird, dry skin/hormonal reaction on my right cheek that is less-than-pretty to look at. If it wasn’t for concealer, I probably wouldn’t leave the house because I’m too embarrassed. So, seriously – thanks to whoever came up with the eight million options we now have in this department.
My health. I’ve found a new obsession with the stair climber, and I have to give credit to all my running for building up my endurance and leg muscles to take on this machine. A year ago, I probably wouldn’t have made it more than five minutes. Now, I can go almost 30 minutes and then still run a mile and a half after! My health isn’t always something I think about day-to-day, but it’s things like that that remind me how I’ve gotten myself in shape and continue to push myself/my body to achieve more.
Our home. With what’s going on in California, I feel so thankful that we have a home and roof over our heads. Ryan and I have a tendency to constantly look toward the future and talk about our next house that we sometimes forget to appreciate what we have right now. We’re incredibly lucky and blessed to have all that we have – something that we need to keep in perspective.
Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. On a lighter note because what’s wrong with some cheesy romance holiday movies? Absolutely nothing. They make me smile, laugh and forget about everything else for a couple hours. That’s a gift.
My parents. They’re pretty stellar and the ultimate example of how to step up and do everything right. I love them both and am proud to be their kid.
The slow cooker. Easy, quick meals are my main objective right now. It doesn’t get much easier than dumping everything into a Crock-Pot and setting the timer. No fuss, no thought.
A heated blanket and mattress pad. For someone who is literally always cold, both these things are godsend. Not sure I could survive the cold, winter temps without either.
Time. Because of what I do and my flexible schedule, I recognize that I have more time than some others to accomplish the never-ending to-do list for this time of year. While I still feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, I’m lucky that I can do certain things on my own time and not feel rush/pressured.
I encourage you to take time this week and throughout the hectic holiday season to acknowledge whatever it is that you’re most grateful for! As you can tell from my list, it doesn’t have to be life-altering or something super profound – it’s the little things that add up and make a difference in our daily lives.
