Remember when home decor posts/home updates used to be a regular thing around here? Yeah, me too! I miss this type of content because I love to look back to see just how far our house as come. As well as Ryan’s handyman skills and my pretend-decorating skills. 😉 We haven’t tackled any major renovations since our laundry room – in the Midwest, we have to take advantage of our short summer season to get outdoor projects done! However, since I was zero help to Ryan with redoing our deck I’ve been indulging in some redecorating. First up – our family room built-ins.
I couldn’t for the life of me find a photo of how these shelves were decorated before. This post shows what they looked like right after we completed the room renovation a few years ago. Take my word for it that they were a bit busy. I was tired of mismatched frames, old photos, stacked books, etc. You get the picture (hopefully).
This was my inspiration. I work so much better with decorating if I have a picture I can try to recreate with my own style and what I have available. Here’s what I came up with! *The day that I wrote this post it was perfectly sunny. Then, the next day when I took the pictures it was so dark I had to bump the ISO to 1600. #grainypictures4ever
Now I’m left with clean, simply-styled shelves! I find myself smiling at these shelves every single time we’re in the family room. That’s a lot since that’s where we spend 90% of our time.
The biggest change was swapping out the photo frames I had with new white ones from IKEA. There’s two different styles of frames – Söndrum and Virserum. I like the interest that brings while still looking coordinated. The gray baskets also are new from Target. Otherwise, I “shopped” my own decor stash and rearranged a few things. Sometimes, that’s all it takes!
Since I don’t like to overhaul these shelves (or any of my decor, really) every season, I left certain spots open specifically for seasonal decor. That damn letter board has been sitting on the floor in my office for months, so I’m thrilled to finally have a cute and functional place for it. And, I easily can swap out the arrangement next to it for whatever season we’re in. Obviously, right now I’m all about fall and pumpkins. Kind of digging the cotton stems casually hanging out in the baskets, too.
There’s my updated family room built-ins styling and some simple fall decor ideas! I linked to what I could, but if you’re looking for something specific let me know and I’ll try to find it/something similar. The rest of our home fall decor is the same as last year, so be sure to check out this post and this one for even more decorating inspiration!
