Budget-Friendly Modern Farmhouse Half Bathroom Renovation

One of my favorite home projects to-date is our budget-friendly modern farmhouse half bathroom renovation. This renovation took us the least amount of time, we were able to salvage the base of the vanity, and we DIY’ed a lot of the details to keep costs down. What isn’t there to love?!

Of course, we have to take a look at the before picture – you should know the drill by now! Here is the bathroom from when we moved in two years ago.

I’m digging all those brass accents, aren’t you? My personal favorite is the random towel bar on the back wall. Oh, and that salmon-color tile? That took my dad almost an entire day to tear up before the new floor was installed. I’m still not sure that his knees have recovered. #thanksdad

But, low and behold several months later, we’ve transformed this little room into something that not only we enjoy but hope our guests do, too.

Isn’t it amazing what a little bit of paint can do? I might be bias, but I don’t think you’d ever guess that this bathroom used to look like it did before we made all these changes!

Like I mentioned before, our primary goal with this project was to keep costs down. While a guest/half bathroom is important, we didn’t want to break the bank on a space that doesn’t get a ton of use. So for us, that meant salvaging the vanity with the exception of the counter and sink/faucet. We were able to do just that! All it took was a bit of sanding, a fresh coat of white paint and new hardware.

Is this the bathroom vanity of my dreams? Absolutely not, but this house also isn’t our forever home so I’m willing to make compromises. And, I think it turned out pretty dang good!

The vanity top is something that Ryan created from scratch. (I think he needs to start a DIY blog … just sayin’.) We knew we wanted to continue our wood trend that we have in other rooms of the house, so Ryan put his wheels in motion and did this all himself – even the installation of the sink and faucet! I really love how the farmhouse-style vessel sink resembles what we now have in the kitchen. It really ties it together!

Perhaps my most favorite finishing touch of the whole space is our DIY rustic ladder. You guys – this is so CHEAP and EASY to do! We even opted to get the “crappy” wood from Menards because I really wanted it to feel like a salvaged rustic ladder. One coat of stain was all we needed, and it became the perfect accent piece. It’s such a nice alternative to shelves!

And I want Ryan to share how he did the vanity top–love that! I think it makes the whole space feel much more unique

      • 12.11.16

Thank you! He really brought my whole vision to life. That vanity isn’t a standard size, so it was going to be pretty expensive to order a solid-material top. Hence why we went with wood! Thank you, Lord for giving me such a handy hubby. 🙂

Thank you! Seeing these separate rooms come together now really validates that we made the right decision with that flooring.
