Battle of the Drugstore Brows

I have a confession – I’ve fallen in love with two drugstore eyebrow products.

Many of us think that all eyebrow pencils are created equal, but in fact, different types of pencils can be used to achieve different brow looks. The Maybelline Define-a-Brow and L’Oreal Paris Brow Stylist Sculptor brow pencils are top-notch drugstore product selections that serve different purposes based on your brows and the look you are trying to achieve.

I’ve been reaching for the L’Oreal Brow Stylist on days that I just want to quickly fill in my brows, and I’m not concerned whether they are perfectly defined or not. On the other hand, I always reach for the Maybelline pencil when I have a few extra minutes to spare and I want a precise, defined brow.

I recommend that brow pencil beginners start with the Maybelline pencil solely because the fine tip is much easier to work with. L’Oreal’s pencil takes some getting used to since it is a thick pencil with a heavy wax finish; unless you are experienced with brow products and know how to use a light hand, this product can lead you to have heavier and fuller brows than you otherwise intended.

These products are dead ringers for both the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Perfect Brow Pencil, so I suggest that you try these products at the drugstore prices before spending more on the high-end products – you won’t be disappointed!

  1. Girl, thanks so much for this post! I have been on the hunt for some good drugstore eyebrow products! I think I'll be picking these up tonight. 🙂

  2. I've used the highlighting end a couple times, but I'm still trying to figure out how to use it and then blend it in without smudging my brows. I think I just need to get a small brush or something – it's a good highlighting color, though!

  7. Lol, I have my dad's eyebrows, too! They are very thick and grow like weeds, so I have to pluck them quite often.

  8. I could understand why you don't do them everyday given your profession! You probably want a break from all the makeup. 🙂

  9. I'm so glad you find these posts helpful! You'll have to let me know if you try out the Maybelline pencil – you will be amazed at what filled-in brows do for one's face and features!

  11. Right?! And, it's so hard to find drugstore brow products that don't have that dreaded red undertone.

  12. I really think you'd like the L'Oreal one then – since it's a thicker pencil and you have thicker brows, you don't have to worry as much about precision!

This is a great comparison, thanks for all the info! I'm using the Maybelline pencil right now but I think I'm going to try the L'Oreal one next. Do you find you use the highlighting end very often?

  17. Great review, thank you for sharing! My brows are not my favorite feature. I seriously have my dad's eyebrows so I get them threaded or waxed once a month. Some day I'll have to try one of those pencils though. I hope that you had a nice weekend!! 🙂

  18. I'm still only in the habit of doing my brows on special occasions and always when I'm performing. I should incorporate it into my everyday!

  19. I LOVE that you share this information for make-up dummies like myself! I've shamelessly never done anything, but pluck my brows before! But I've wanted to for so long I just didn't know what to buy! So I'll be getting that Maybelline pencil today 🙂

  21. I never use to do my brows until I finally got a little kit thing and now I'm like I can't believe after all these years I have been skipping that final step! Thanks for the review when the formulas have red undertones it kinda freaks me out so good to know these two don't!

Awesome review girl – the L'Oreal one is a little more up my alley since my brows are pretty thick and not really sparse so I just need a touch up here and there!! I like the brush that each offers too! xo, Biana BlovedBoston
