One-Year Wedding Anniversary

This Sunday marks mine and Ryan’s one-year wedding anniversary. It’s really hard to believe that this time last year we were filled with anticipation for our big day and anxiously awaiting all our friends and family to arrive in town.

With each passing day, our wedding day becomes more of a distant memory; however, more importantly, we’ve refocused our attention to our marriage and relationship with each other. This first year hasn’t been all butterflies and rainbows, but we were together through everything and that made it fun, special and memorable.

I thought it would be fun to give all of you a little glimpse into our lives as a married couple with a few questions that we each answered.

1. What about marriage weren’t you expecting?
K: Since Ryan and I lived together for almost three years before we got married, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what marriage would be like. Well, yeah – I didn’t have a clue. I have an overwhelming need to protect and defend Ryan as I never want anybody to bring him down. I also want to include him in everything – even the mundane things, such as grocery shopping.
R: I expected to want more alone time than I actually do. Because I’m away at work a lot and away from Karly and Finley, I want to spend all my extra free time with them.

2. Things the other person can’t live without?
K: His nightly beer or glass of bourbon and a bowl of popcorn. He’s a pretty easy man to please (luckily).
R: Dry shampoo, liquid foundation and DVR.

3. Any favorite traditions?
K: The one we are about to start Sunday! We decided to eat the top of our wedding cake when we received our photos back from the studio instead of waiting a whole year. So, we now intend to buy a small round cake from a bakery or the grocery store and eat it with our custom vintage forks that I had made for our wedding day while we flip through our wedding album. I’m sure we’ll also break out our champagne flutes for an anniversary toast.
R: Since I was total anti-movies before I met Karly, I now look forward to our award show nights. Regardless of which one it is, the Emmy’s, Oscars, etc., we always order Chinese food and have a cozy night in.

4. Best meal the other person makes?
K: Well, no offense to Ryan, but it’s a rare occasion in our household if he cooks a meal. However, I do have to give him credit for his slow cooker pork chops and anything he makes on the grill.
R: Well, it’s way too difficult for me to pick just one. BUT, with that, I’d have to say chili.

5. What you’ve learned in a year?
K: I used to always refer to my parent’s house and where I grew up as home. Although some parts of that place always will feel that way, home is now wherever Ryan (and our puppy, Finn!) is. Ryan and our life as a married couple is my first priority and comes before anything else; as long as we’re together, that’s home.
R: Between living in three different places, traveling for work and everything else that life has thrown at us, I believe that we can conquer anything.

6. One year later, is there a moment from the wedding that stands out the most?
K: As we were lining up for the bridal party introductions at the reception, Ryan and I stood quietly in the back, smiling and laughing as our friends and family made their grand entrances. As it got closer to our turn to be introduced as Mr. and Mrs., we both turned to each other at the same time and I said, “we are about to enter our wedding reception!” It pretty much summed up all the emotions and excitement that we had been feeling for the past 15 months, and it set the tone for a perfect, fun-filled evening.
R: Obviously, the moment I saw Karly walk down the aisle. We opted not to see each other before the ceremony, so that was the first time I had seen her since the night before. That moment is forever ingrained in my memory. I’ll never forget it.

Happy early anniversary to you, too! I'm glad we weren't the only ones that had a rough first year of marriage, but you're right – I couldn't imagine it any other way or with anyone else by my side. That's what marriage is all about!

Thank you! It's actually the same church that my mom and dad were married in – they have since renovated it, but it held extra-special meaning that way, too.
