As so many others have done before me the past few weeks, I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and do a little about me and my blog for today’s post. I always enjoy reading these as I get to know the women behind the blogs that I love to read a little bit better. For any new followers or existing readers, I hope this offers you additional insight as to who this Midwest girl is!
My husband, Ryan, and I have been together for six years, and we are just about to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary! Our little family grew by one in July when we adopted our Lab mix fur-baby, Finley (Finn for short). I’m the youngest of three kids with an older sister and brother.
I have a background in journalism and mass communication. I worked in a corporate communications office for three and a half years during and right after college. I now operate my own virtual assistant and consultant business, and I’m pursuing my long-time passion of freelance writing.
What I Love to Do
Blogging has become the ultimate passion project in my life, but beyond that, I also enjoy reading, binge-watching TV shows, fitness, catching up on the latest pop culture news, shopping, painting my nails, and of course, spending time with my husband and fur-child.
Spaghetti – all day, e’erday. Oh, and Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Oh, and Snappers from Costco. Those things are life-changing.
Pink/blush and gold (probably obvious from my blog design). For interior decorating, I like to stick to grey, white and black with splashes of color that correspond with the time of year.
Standard Coffee Order
I typically only order coffee during the holidays, so as you can probably guess, it’s either a Pumpkin Spice Latte or Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks.
Standard Bar Order
Moscato or Riesling for wine; Amaretto Sour or Malibu and Diet for mixed drinks; Angry Orchard or some sort of hard cider for any time.
Places I Shop
Target, Old Navy, Kohl’s, Forever 21, TJMaxx, Ulta or Sephora, and TJMaxx (especially for home decor).
Bedtime and Wake up Time
We typically are in bed between 10 and 11 p.m. Nowadays with Finn, he has us up between 5:30 and 6 a.m. to go outside. If we can swing it, we typically go back to bed until 7 a.m., and then we are up and ready for the day.
Beauty Products I Can’t Live Without
It always takes me forever to decide how to answer questions like these! I would have to say Estee Lauder Double Wear Light foundation, MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed, an eyelash curler, CoverGirl Clump Crusher mascara, Rimmel Lipstick in Paradise, and Urban Decay’s De-Slick Setting Spray.
What I Blog About
I primarily blog about beauty and style. Once in a blue moon, I’ll post a delicious recipe that I tried out and loved, or a tutorial for a DIY home project. I also share highlights of my week every week as part of the High Five for Friday linkup.
First Blog I Read
Cupcakes and Cashmere. Emily’s style, interior design skills and general way of life instantly inspired me, and she continues to be one of my favorite bloggers today.
How Did I Start Blogging
After Ryan and I moved from Des Moines, Iowa, to Madison, Wis., last year, I was looking for a creative outlet and a way to document the last remaining months of our engagement and all things about our wedding. So, without much planning or any idea what I was doing, Miss in the Midwest was born in August 2013. Since I was naive about how much time and effort blogging really took, my posting schedule and topics were all over the place, and I decided to ultimately go on hiatus until this past February when I could dedicate my time and effort to make this space on the Web what I always envisioned it to be.
Why I Blog
This blog has become more to me than I ever thought it would. I blog because first and foremost, I love to write. Secondly, this little place allows me to channel my creativity into something productive and provides an outlet for me to discuss all things beauty, style and fashion with others who find joy in the same topics. I feel like I’ve come a long way since I first started this site, and my hope is that it only continues to grow and bring other people as much joy as it brings me. I’m so thankful for the friendships that have stemmed from this blog as I am continually inspired and motivated by the women that I speak to on a daily basis through this little community that we have.
